CRS and Changhua County to Expand Clean Energy Options in Taiwan

(JUNE 27, 2017)—Officials from Changhua County, Taiwan and Center for Resource Solutions (CRS) signed an agreement today on joint initiatives that will help support the Taiwan clean energy market and allow greater investment by global companies that want to power their operations with renewable energy. At the signing ceremony, which took place at the Taiwan Culture Center of Taipei Economic & Cultural Office in Milpitas, California, officials outlined the scope of the agreement, in which CRS would help the county increase access to renewable energy resources and attract multinational companies committed to powering their operations with clean energy. The initiative will also support residential and local business access to a cleaner electricity mix.

“We are excited to partner with Changhua County in taking this transformative step toward a robust, transparent clean energy market for local residents and businesses, and multinational companies that want to use renewable electricity in Taiwan,” said CRS Executive Director Jennifer Martin, who signed the agreement today.

Under the agreement, CRS will help Changhua County establish and grow opportunities for renewable electricity purchasing and use in Taiwan, allowing residents and businesses to use locally generated clean energy. CRS will also initiate a pilot project with provisional Green-e certification in tandem with the development of a Taiwan-specific Green-e Renewable Energy Standard to certify transactions that integrate with the new Taiwan Central Government’s REC system. This project will make Changhua County home to one of the first Green-e certifications outside of North America.

In April 2016, Google provided a seed grant to CRS to lay groundwork for renewable energy policy and infrastructure support throughout Asia, beginning in Taiwan. Through this effort, CRS is working with local organizations and governments, including Changhua County, to accelerate the development of a voluntary renewable energy market in Taiwan.
